STUDENTS - Please review the schedule to assure that there are no conflicts if you are performing a One Act. We plan to have a very full Thepsys Schedule this year, with over 200 Thespys. Therefore, it is critical that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your event scheduled time. Any students who arrive late, will not be allowed to perform their Thespy.
Thespsys locations will be announced in Eventsential when Eventsential is released, and a master Thepsys schedule will be placed outside of the Thespys Office for additional information. Register by 11/11 on Open Water starting in Oct.! Thespys rules and rubrics subject to change; will have an update in October. Thespy registration for the 2023 Festival has closed. STATE THESPY REGISTRATION:
The EdTA Thespy program culminates in a showcase of outstanding entries at the Virginia Thespian Festival Mainstage closing ceremony.
THESPYS can empower you as an educator and advocate for your program:
THESPYS can empower you as an educator and advocate for your program:
- Students can be adjudicated using the National Core Arts Standards in 18 different categories including: Monologues, Musical Theatre, Duet Performances, Group Performances, Stage Management, Design
- Student receive ratings of SUPERIOR, EXCELLENT, GOOD, or FAIR
- Students who receive ratings of Superior may advance to the ITF in Bloomington, Indiana.
- Students who receive ratings of superior receive a letter from the International Thespian Society for their portfolio, as well as a medal at the closing ceremony
- Principals will receive a letter from the Virginia Thespians congratulating you, your students and their work.

VIRGINIA MAIN STAGE SHOWCASE - ON SUNDAY
Up to twelve selected performance participants will present their pieces on the Festival main stage and selected technical Thespys participants will have their work prominently displayed during Festival.
HOW MANY EVENTS CAN I DO?: Students may register for up to several separate Thespy events, given that there they are many separate categories. If a student receives a superior in multiple events, they must choose 1 per category to go on to Nationals.

1. All (non-musical) material must be done from work from one of the following publishers:

2. Self published/public domain work are mostly unavailable for competition. A limited number of DM Larson plays are acceptable. Check the full rule guide for a complete list. Please avoid the "red light list" for pieces.
3. If you have a piece not in the approved list, approval must be sought from the EDTA office.
4. There has been further clarification on the use of props, including what is, or is not allowed for personal items, chairs, clothing, and hair.
5. Further rules on acceptable use of copyrighted logos in Technical Thepsys, primarily Publicity/Marketing.
6. Technical Thepsys can be presented electronically, but there are some guidelines.
7. Gender Identity: students are allowed to present pieces intended for the opposite gender, but should not change assigned pronouns or text to make it for their gender. Performance should be judged fairly based on criteria set forth in rubric.
8. Multi-troupe Thepsys will be allowed for the upcoming year. All entrants must be approved by the teachers from both schools. More details are in the rule changes.
9. You may enter multiple entries to see if you qualify for nationals but only one per category may qualify to move on.
10. NEW Musical Theatre Dance submissions are permitted. Thespian(s) must present one dance selection from a published score written for a musical theatre scene with a focus on dance performance. All dance performances must be accompanied by music. The adjudicators will consider how well the piece is danced as well as how well it is acted. Dance selections which include brief moments of vocalization are acceptable, if required to perform the piece. See the rubrics above for more information.
