JUDGES - Please take a couple of minutes to watch the following video before judging IE sessions at Festival!
STUDENTS - Please review the schedule to assure that there are no conflicts if you are performing a One Act. We have a very full Individual Event Schedule this year, with over 200 Individual Events. Therefore, it is critical that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your event scheduled time. Any students who arrive late, will not be allowed to perform their Individual Event.
Individual Event locations will be announced in Guidebook when Guidebook is released, and a master IE schedule will be placed outside of the Individual Event Office for additional information. |
STATE INDIVIDUAL EVENT REGISTRATION:
The National Individual Events (NIES) program culminates in a showcase of outstanding entries at the Virginia Thespian Festival Mainstage closing ceremony.

- Students can be adjudicated using the National Core Arts Standards in 18 different categories including: Monologues, Musical Theatre, Duet Performances, Group Performances, Stage Management, Design
- Student receive ratings of SUPERIOR, EXCELLENT, GOOD, FAIR
- Students who receive ratings of Superior may advance to the NIES in Lincoln Nebraska.
- Students who receive ratings of superior receive a letter from the International Thespian Society for their portfolio, as well as a medal at the closing ceremony
- Principals will receive a letter from the Virginia Thespians congratulating you, your students and their work.

VIRGINIA MAIN STAGE SHOWCASE - ON SUNDAY
Up to twelve selected performance participants will present their pieces on the Festival main stage and selected technical IE participants will have their work prominently displayed during Festival.
HOW MANY EVENTS CAN I DO?: Students may register for up to two separate Individual Events, given that they are in separate categories. If a student receives a superior in both individual events, they must choose 1 to go on to Nationals.

Individual Event adjudication is available at the state (but not national) level for Make-Up Design.
Here is a small summary of major changes for Individual Events. For more detailed language and guidelines check the tab above and the help for each IE.
1. All (non-musical) material must be done from work from one of the following publishers:
Broadway Play Publishing
Dramatic Publishing
Dramatists Play Service
Heuer Publishing
Samuel French
Pioneer Drama
Playscripts, INC
Samuel French, INC
Smith and Kraus
Stage Partners
Stage Rights
Theatre Folk
YouthPLAYS
Music Theatre International
Theatrical Rights Worldwide

Any public domain play written before 1923.
2. Self published/public domain work are mostly unavailable for competition. A limited number of DM Larson plays are acceptable. Check the full rule guide for a complete list.
3. If you have a piece not in the approved list, approval must be sought from the EDTA office.
4. There has been further clarification on the use of props, including what is, or is not allowed for personal items, chairs, clothing, and hair.
5. Further rules on acceptable use of copyrighted logos in Technical IEs, primarily Publicity/Marketing.
6. Technical IEs can be presented electronically, but there are some guidelines.
7. Gender Identity, students are allowed to present pieces intended for the opposite gender, but should not change assigned pronouns or text to make it for their gender. Performance should be judged fairly based on criteria set forth in rubric.
8. Multi-troupe IEs will be allowed for the upcoming year. All entrants must be approved by the teachers from both schools. More details are in the rule changes.
